Cadet, Military Academy (Dec. 1899); Second Lieutenant, Artillery (June 1901); First Lieutenant (November 1903); Captain (June 1905); Major (July 1914); Lieutenant Colonel (July 1918); member, Peace Plenipotentiary Party [Paris] (Feb. 1919); Instructor, Army Staff College (April 1919); Colonel (July 1921); Major General (Mar. 1926); Lieutenant General (August 1931); Commander, Formosan Army Corps (August 1936 — August 1937); Inspector General Military Education (August 26, 1937 — February 14, 1938); General (November 1937); Commander, Central China Expeditionary Force (February 1938); Chief Aide-de-Camp to Emperor (25 May 1939 — 29 August 1939); Army Minister, Abe Cabinet (30 August 1939 — 15 January 1940); Army Minister, Yonai Cabinet (16 January 1940 — 21 July 1940); Commander, China Expeditionary Force (March 1941 — May 1944); awarded title Field Marshal (June 1944); Inspector General Military Education (22 Novovember 1944 — 7 April 1945). Arrested 1 December 1945; designated war criminal by U.S. and China. Charged on forty-one counts (reduced to ten), found guilty on six counts; sentenced to life imprisonment, paroled in 1954 due to ill health, unconditionally released in 1958.
