Graduated Law College, Tokyo Imperial University (July 1888); appointed probationary judge (August 1890); appointed judge (October 1890); Doctor of Laws (June 1907); Vice Justice Minister, Second Saionji Cabinet (September 1911 — December 1912); Chief Justice, Supreme Court (October 1921); Justice Minister, Second Yamamoto Cabinet (6 September 1923 — 6 January 1924); appointed to House of Peers, Imperial Diet (January 1924); appointed to Privy Council (February 1924); Vice President, Privy Council (12 April 1926 — 13 March 1936); created Baron (October 1926); President, Privy Council (13 March 1936 — 5 January 1939); Prime Minister (5 January 1 9 3 9 — 29 August 1939); State Minister, Second Konoe Cabinet (6 December 1940 — 21 December 1940); Home Minister, Second Konoe Cabinet (21 December 1940 — 17 July 1941); State Minister, Third Konoe Cabinet (18 July 1941 — 17 October 1941); President, Privy Council (9 April 1945 — 15 December 1945); founder and President, Kokuhonsha. Arrested 1 December 1945; designated war criminal by U.S. and China. Charged on fifty-two counts (reduced to ten), found guilty on six counts; sentenced to life imprisonment, paroled in 1952 due to ill health.
