General (April 1936); Army Minister, First Konoe Cabinet (3 June 1938 — 4 January 1939); Army Minister, Hiranuma Cabinet (5 January 1939 — 29 August 1939); Chief of Staff, China Expeditionary Force (September 1939 — 1940); General (July 1940); Commander, Chosen Army (July 1941 — April 1945); Commander, 7th Area Army [Singapore] (April 1945 — September 1945). Designated war criminal by China, U.S., and U.K; held as prisoner of war until start of trial; appeared as defense witness at IMTFE. Charged on forty-one counts (reduced to ten), found guilty on eight counts; sentenced to death by hanging.
