Born 8 June 1887; died 4 June 1949. Graduated Economics Department, Tokyo Imperial University (July 1914); Probationary Consul, Mukden (July 1914); Third Secretary, Japanese Embassy to U.S. (June 1918); member, Plenipotentiary Party, Washington Naval Conference (September 1921); Second Secretary, Japanese Legation in China (May 1923); First Secretary, Japanese Embassy to Germany (June 1926); member, Plenipotentiary Party, Geneva Naval Disarmament Conference (April 1927); Minister to Sweden, Norway, Denmark (June 1933 — April 1937); Minister to Finland (June 1933 — December 1936); Ambassador to Italy (September 1938 — January 1940). Arrested 17 November 1945; designated war criminal by U.S; appeared as defense witness at IMTFE. Charged on twenty-five counts (reduced to five), found guilty on one count; sentenced to life imprisonment, died while in prison.
