Nikon WU-1b Wireless Mobile Adapter

Works wonders

The adapter, plus the iOS app, turns an iPhone or iPad or iPad mini into a remote screen for select, recent Nikon cameras (check to make sure your camera is supported). From the iPhone or iPad, you can pick a focus point and fire the camera, and then the image is wirelessly transmitted to the iPhone or iPad.

I would give it an excellent rating except — it is a bit awkward. You have to open the flap over the mini USB port in the side of the camera, which means there is something sticking out that is both breakable and somewhat awkward. But that awkwardness aside, it gives you amazing hands-free control of your camera, perfect for some types of wildlife shots or for studio work.

Update:

I eventually stopped using the WU-1b. The problem: reliability. Many times I’d insert the adapter, fire up my iPhone or iPad, fire up the companion Nikon app and — nothing. The app could not “see” the camera. On occasions that it did see the camera, the app would frequently crash.

Eventually, I looked around and found pretty much everyone else was having the same experience, which is a shame. When it did work, it was impressive. But when it didn’t work, it was Very, Very Vexing.
