Seahawk

Seahawk is a weekly (usually) newspaper published by Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka, the US Navy command at Naval Base Yokosuka. The government of Japan owns and operates the  naval base; the US Navy is a tenant. Seahawk has, at various times, been one of the most widely read English-language newspapers in Japan. As a Navy paper, it is not too surprising to learn that it has a keen interest in the US Navy and US Marines.

The Seahawk was created in 1948-49. Though the logo is similar, both the newspaper and logo predate the Seattle Seahawks football team, which was founded in 1974. The newspaper takes its name from the black-eared kites (which the Japanese refer to as “sea eagles”) that are common along the coast of Japan. The paper was printed at the Stars and Stripes office in the Akasaka Press Center in Tokyo.

Double-truck stories

In newspaper terminology, a truck is a cart that holds all the lead type necessary to create a tabloid-sized page of print. A double-truck is a page that is twice tabloid size, as it requires twice as many lead letters, numbers, spaces, etc. Even though it has been decades since the Seahawk was printed using lead type, a double-truck story is a story that occupies two pages, usually two facing pages.
